County Lead Volunteer Update

I have been delighted to visit a number of great scouting events over the last few weeks and it reminded me of what great scouting is going on around the county. I visited Grantham & District Scouts cubs on water day at Rutland Water. The cubs were canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and having lots of fun! It was also a pleasure to meet many of you at the recently held LincsFest.
I also had the real honour of seeing Rosie Flint awarded her Kings Scout Award by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire at Sleaford 's AGM. Well done Rosie! I was also pleased to have the chance to join South Holland at their AGM when they presented a number of adult awards and a Chief Scout's Award.
The team have also been out and about - Ellie Broome popped into the nights away training weekend. She was very impressed and said it looked like a really comprehensive training course! Thank you to all the volunteers who attended with a big thank you to the team who continuously run these events!
We have an important few weeks ahead of us with the announcement of the "go-live" for the new membership system. This looks really good and please do read the emails from HQ saying what you need to do to make this as successful as possible.

Gilwell Takeover Camp Report This summer, many of Coastal and Manby Scouts, from the sleepy Louth District, had an adventure many miles from Lincolnshire at Gilwell Park, headquarters of Scouts UK. From August 11th to 18th, 151 miles and four hours away from where they started, 12 Scouts and two tired leaders spent a full seven days at one of the largest permanent Scout sites in the world, and made a trip to the capital as well. And perhaps most exciting for the leaders and parents, this camp was fully funded by Scouts Adventures for us! The Scouts began by helping spruce up Gilwell with a spot of fence painting and gardening, before taking on a range of adventurous activities across the site, including fencing (of the sword variety this time), archery, climbing, rafting, hiking and fishing, alongside more calming activities such as a morning of crafts, and some coding with the Raspberry Pi team. Mid-week they learnt about the cultures of many volunteers at the site, trying Brazilian sweets, Mexican salsas, playing Kenyan marble games, Korean paper throwing game and the Argentinian Necker Stealing Game! But of course, the big day followed, a trip to London on the Overground and underground trains, to enjoy a boat cruise on the Thames. We saw many buildings from the cruise, including the Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge, before spending an afternoon with creatures from across the world in Sealife London including the popular penguins. In the evenings Scouts watched movies and scavenger-hunted their way through the historic park, but also a lot of time was spent mixing with other Scouts from across the UK. We had one Scout finish the week with a different accent to the one she started with! One of the most popular spots was the Quick, a hill that overlooked an estuary and part of the London area, where Scouts went for their own private time to talk amongst themselves. And if they felt peckish, Gilwell had many blackberry bushes ripe for the plundering. But food wasn’t a concern with the fully-catered meals becoming a welcome change from other camps for Scouts and Leaders. We had hot meals with a pudding for lunch and dinner, and even began the week with a full roast! We didn’t even need to do the washing up, which I think adults appreciated even more than Scouts. At the end of the week, after an invigorating campfire and a busy night of necker trading (including with some visiting German Scouts), it was no wonder that all but one Scout slept on the ride home. But they all perked up in time to tell their parents of their many, many adventures. We couldn’t have had this trip without the generous funding from Scouts Adventures, for which we extend warmest thanks, and encourage other eligible groups to apply in the future. We weren’t expecting to receive it either, and here we are!

We’d love your help in sharing an exciting opportunity with young people aged 18-25 in your network! The Scout Association is shaping its new strategy for 2025 and beyond, and we’re seeking insights from young people who are not currently involved in Scouting. We’re hosting a 90-minute workshop where they can share their thoughts and experiences on key topics, including the relevance of Scouting in today’s world, as well as climate change, the cost of living, accessibility, and inclusion. Our goal is to develop a strategy that embeds youth voice, ensuring it reflects the views of those both inside and outside the movement. New Membership System - Final actions to take You will have now received an email from HQ with our go-live date of 28th November 2024. This will be phased based on roles for around 7 days so you may not have access from the start, it is also important to note that compass will freeze on 7th November 2024 and you can find more information about this here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/volunteer-experience/interim-processes/ It’s really important that you have a unique and personal email address recorded on Compass, without this you won’t have a username for the new digital system. Read our guidance pages for more detail on how to record email addresses on Compass. Training and support From the end of October, we’ll be running online training sessions for all members to familiarise themselves with the new digital tools. Sign up for some introductory training on the tools. There will also be additional training sessions for Lead Volunteers and Team Leaders. In Lincolnshire we want to support the digital go-live as much as possible and to aid that we will be hosting all member webinars, you can register on the links below. We'll also be using our newly formed go-live support team and you'll receive more information about that over the coming weeks as we get closer to compass freeze. Module Validations If you have any modules which have training completed but the module hasn’t been validated it will not transfer into the new learning. Please contact a Training Adviser to get those modules validated. If you have completed a course recently, a register has been kept and it will be added to your record on the new learning system when it goes live. First Aid Any First Aid Course advertised on the County Website is open to all volunteers in all Districts regardless of whether the venue is in your district or not. First Aid – Blended Model (Hampshire Scouts) - *New Date Added* The county will be running another online session to support the Blended Model (Hampshire Scouts). This will be run on: · Thursday 17th October 2024, 7-9.30pm To book a place on the session, please visit the Training page on the County Website: https://www.lincolnshirescouts.org.uk/members/training or https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1037875602867?aff=oddtdtcreator Once you have booked a date, please head to the Hampshire Scouts Website to complete the e-learning before you attend your booked session. https://hampshire-scouts.thinkific.com/courses/firstresponse At the end of the e-learning you will have a form to complete, and a certificate will be available to download. Please keep a copy of the certificate and send a copy to lucy.copeland@lincolnshirescouts.org.uk Then you can complete the short Practical validation session (10B). Face to Face Consolidation sessions In addition to the online sessions, we will be offering some half day sessions where the consolidation part of the Blended Model will be run face to face combined with the practical part (10B). The courses will be advertised on the County Website as soon as trainers, dates and venues are confirmed. 10B Unfortunately, due to other commitments, the First Aid Training Team are unable to offer 10B sessions at Chiller 24. Apologies to all. However, some of the Team will be attending the Rabbit Run and would be on hand if anyone would like to complete the practical session whilst the event is on (Saturday only). Please ask a member of the team/Michelle Nelson on the event. Volunteers who require 10B can always drop in on the face-to-face sessions to complete the practical. Also, if you know you need to complete First Aid soon, you are welcome to come along to one of the face-to-face sessions to complete the practical before doing 10A. A record of you completing 10B will be kept and added to your record when 10A is completed.
